COMPLEX TECHNOLOGY GRANTS SERVICES – OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHT: Artificial Intelligence and the CHIPS Act
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), under the Department of Commerce, has issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) for a competition aimed at fostering collaborations between universities and industry. The focus is on artificial intelligence-powered autonomous experimentation (AI/AE) for sustainable semiconductor materials and processes. The CHIPS Research and Development Office (CHIPS R&D) plans to allocate up to $100 million over five years to support at least two major team-oriented projects.
Key Details
- Objective: To enhance the sustainability and efficiency of semiconductor manufacturing through AI/AE, while also advancing domestic manufacturing capabilities.
- Goals: Improve product performance, manufacturing yield, energy and water efficiency, supply chain resiliency, and reduce emissions and waste.
- Funding Use: Funds can be used for research equipment, basic and applied R&D, workforce development, and technology transition.
- Collaboration: Encourages partnerships between emerging research institutions, industry, other universities, and national labs.
- Timeline: The competition will be announced via a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) on Grants.gov in the fourth quarter of 2024.
NOFO Objectives
CHIPS R&D expects proposals to achieve the following objectives:
- Accelerate research into and delivery of targeted, industry-relevant, sustainable semiconductor materials and processes through AI/AE.
- Incorporate sustainability metrics into semiconductor industry materials discovery, alongside traditional metrics like power, performance, area, and cost.
- Expand the capabilities of emerging research institutions through innovative collaborations with universities, industry, government labs, and other stakeholders.
- Build a workforce of university graduates and research faculty with AI/AE R&D expertise.
